Various types of roasted bean coffee and coffee roastery is an elegant blend of art and science. People put in a lot of time and effort in learning how to get roast bean coffee to perfection. The difference between great coffee and ordinary coffee depends on the roasting level and expertise of the brewer. Roasting the green coffee beans help bring out the flavor and aroma of raw coffee. During roasting at high temperatures a lot of chemical changes take place within the beans. The beans are cooled immediately after reaching the perfect roasting level. Only after roasting the beans do you get the aroma of fine coffee.

Typical Coffee Roasts

Light roast coffee– This has sweet aroma somewhat similar to fermented grapes along with a slight undertone of cinnamon spiciness that you get in an apple pie. The acidity of this roast level and brew will strike your taste buds the moment you take the first sip and later on the malty flavor follows. Even though the light roast has a very thin body, but there isn’t any bitterness.

Medium roast coffee – The sweet aroma of grape along with the malt flavors comes to the fore, but it is the caramelized taste that springs a surprise for your taste buds. With reduced acidity and a fuller body, medium roast beans have an oily surface.

There are three coffee roasts – light, medium, and dark. However, it is not the roast levels that determine the taste, but the brewing technique that does the trick. Even if you use the same bean and roast it at three different levels, the coffee tastes different depending on the brewing technique. The espresso and traditional cupping brewing methods produce wildly different flavors.

Many small coffee roasting houses are springing up. Some of them offer roasting classes and let you use their facilities to create coffee roasts. Parisi Coffee in Kansas City is great example.
